Walter Royal III, MD is the new  Associate Executive Director of the CVNR. He is also a Professor and Chair of the Department of Neurobiology and Director of the Neuroscience Institute of the Morehouse School of Medicine. He oversees the execution of our departmental education and research programs, which includes providing faculty and student mentoring and otherwise supporting the success of our master’s and PhD programs. The former includes a highly successful combined bachelor’s/master’s (BS/MS) degree Neuroscience that recruits students form Morehouse College, Spelman College, and Clark-Atlanta University.

For more than 25 years, Dr. Royal has been involved in research related to the neurovirological and neuroimmunological mechanisms that underlie the development of neurocognitive impairment in individuals with HIV infection and studies of other infectious and inflammatory nervous system disorders. His research program has been both basic science and clinical-translational and has involved animal models and human cohorts.
